Program Associate


Founded in 2010, California Competes is an independent, non-partisan project aimed at bolstering the state’s postsecondary outcomes to foster robust regional economies, vibrant communities, and an engaged citizenry. California Competes is committed to advancing policies and practices that can vastly accelerate and promote degree attainment in our state. We pursue our goals by conducting timely research, developing policy options, and spotlighting promising practices that can improve California’s higher education system. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Program Associate is chiefly responsible for providing programmatic support around communications, research, and policy activities. Specifically, the Program Associate will have the opportunity to contribute to all of California Competes’ activities, including:

  • Maintain the organization’s social media presence (primarily Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn), with support from the Communications Manager
  • Contribute to research projects on postsecondary education, including literature reviews and data analysis
  • Create content and graphics for presentations and other speaking engagements
  • Organize content and logistics for events hosted by California Competes
  • Track legislative activity in Sacramento and conduct analysis of relevant bills
  • Support the team to identify, develop, and advance our policy priorities
  • Monitor the organization’s general media phone line and email inbox 


The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented self-starter and a confident, analytical, and agile problem-solver with the ability to handle several programmatic activities simultaneously. The successful candidate also will demonstrate curiosity by asking questions and taking initiative around both research and policy responsibilities.

  • BA/BS plus two to three years of relevant work experience required.
  • Creative, intellectually-curious self-starter with a strong work ethic, high standards, and integrity
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills
  • Highly skilled in social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
  • A team player with a diplomatic, professional manner, and a sense of humor
  • Working knowledge and/or demonstrated interest in California’s political and higher education system preferred 


  • Full-time, exempt position
