Senior Policy & Research Analyst

Founded in 2010, California Competes is an independent, nonpartisan project aimed at bolstering the state’s postsecondary outcomes to foster robust regional economies, vibrant communities, and an engaged citizenry. California Competes is committed to advancing policies and practices that can vastly accelerate and promote degree attainment in our state. We pursue our goals by conducting timely research, developing policy options, and spotlighting promising practices that can improve California’s higher education system. Position

Reporting to our Executive Director, the Senior Policy & Research Analyst is responsible for managing our policy advocacy and policy-focused research activities.

  • Work with Executive Director to develop and implement the organization’s legislative agenda
  • Proactively engage and field requests from policymakers in Sacramento to provide technical assistance and serve as a resource, including attending and testifying at legislative hearings.
  • Conduct bill analysis and analyze higher education budget and policy proposals
  • Collaborate with the Senior Research Analyst to conduct research projects on policy issues related to higher education and workforce issues, and lead development of policy recommendations for written pieces
  • Identify and implement new strategies to advance legislative agenda and strengthen California Competes relationships with policymakers and changemakers statewide


Qualifications

The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial with the ability to manage several activities simultaneously. The successful candidate will demonstrate curiosity by asking questions and taking initiative around both policy and research responsibilities.

  • BA/BS plus 5+ years of relevant experience required. Master’s degree in Public Policy, Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of California’s policy landscape and higher education system
  • Creative, intellectually-curious self-starter with a strong work ethic, high standards, and integrity
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media platforms
  • A team player with an entrepreneurial spirit, a diplomatic, professional manner, and a sense of humor

Compensation

  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Salary commensurate with experience
  • Medical, dental and vision benefits; voluntary 403(b) plan
