Champion a Robust Statewide Data System

Data sits at the core of our work. Aggressively addressing California’s degree gap through state policy requires a solid understanding of:

  • Current and future student populations;
  • Effective institutional policies, practices, and outcomes; and
  • Current and ongoing workforce demands.

In short, reform requires an evidence-based approach predicated on a comprehensive, reliable data system. Currently, limited institutional and student data are available to demonstrate the state's progress toward addressing the degree attainment gap and to develop policies for how the state might close the gap.

Now is the time to build a statewide coordinated data system. Not only is a comprehensive data system important for research and analysis purposes, it is also an essential component to ensuring greater accountability for the deep investments the state makes in higher education.
