California Competes will host the California Higher Education Policy Institute for Legislators: Focus on Workforce Alignment on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 in Sacramento, CA. The main event will take place from 5:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. with 30 minutes pre- and post-receptions for additional time to connect and continue discussions. The objectives of the event include:

  • Promote Strategic Thinking: Create a space exclusively for legislators to think broadly and explore strategies about how to support California’s workforce demands by aligning higher education and workforce development.
  • Build and Strengthen Relationships: Foster deeper relationships and conversations between legislators and experts in higher education and workforce policy.
  • Exchange Ideas: Discuss successes, challenges, and insights while enjoying a meal together and having fun.


I. Pre-Event Reception (5:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.)

Legislators and California Competes Board of Directors members and staff will have the opportunity to meet and mingle over refreshments.

II. Dinner and Fireside Chat on Higher Education and Workforce Alignment (5:30 p.m. – 6:55 p.m.)

When higher education and workforce align, Californians get higher-paying jobs, employers get better-qualified candidates, communities get engaged citizenry propelling society forward, and our state builds a strong, inclusive, and sustainable economy fueled by a skilled, diverse workforce. We will host an engaging fireside conversation on the current landscape of higher education and workforce development and efforts underway to strengthen effective career pathways for all Californians

III. Closing Remarks (6:55 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.)

Attendees will share a toast as select legislators provide closing remarks.

IV. Post-Event Reception (7:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.)
