Thank You for Celebrating California Competes's 10th Anniversary with Us

Thank you for celebrating California Competes’s 10th anniversary with us over the last year, plus a few extra months due to the pandemic! We concluded this milestone year with an evening reception earlier this month that convened over 100 policy, higher education, business, and community leaders and highlighted what we have achieved in the last decade, as well as the work ahead to advance a reimagined system of higher education that helps California recover stronger.

Photos from the reception are now available on the event page. While you’re at the page, please also check out the 10th anniversary interview series featuring policy leaders and partners, including a roundtable with California Competes alumni, sharing their insights on various higher education and workforce priorities with Executive Director Dr. Su Jin Gatlin Jez. The latest interview is from the celebration’s keynote speaker, US Department of Education Under Secretary James Kvaal.

Forging ahead, we have several new and exciting projects, focused on:

  • Assessing the challenges and opportunities for employer engagement in higher education for better coordination across the education-to-work space;

  • Providing a clearer picture of the state of opportunity across the state through a new and improved California Postsecondary to Prosperity Dashboard;

  • Strategic thought leadership on the boards and councils of the Cradle-to-Career Data System, Tipping Point Community, Credential Engine, and The Graduate! Network, while continuing service with the Public Policy Institute of California and the Campaign for College Opportunity;

  • Illuminating the impact of California Community Colleges developmental education reforms on adult learners; and

  • Convening our state’s policy leaders and their staff to raise awareness of key issues facing higher education policy through our re-launched, annual California Higher Education Policy Institute events.

We would like to acknowledge and give a very special thank you to our legislative co-hosts, Assemblymember Steven Choi, Assemblymember Jose Medina, Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, Senator John Laird, Senator Connie Leyva, and Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh, and our event sponsors. Their support and investment in creating a venue to come together and celebrate helped make this event a success.

Thank you for your continued partnership, and we look forward to another decade of collective impact.
