Student Voice: Coordination Between Local Government and Higher Education Changes Lives

/

The Hechinger Report recently published an op-ed by Jairo Salgado, a recent Compton College graduate who shares his journey from homelessness to economic stability—a trajectory that was created through multi-sector partnerships. This op-ed reveals the myriad of challenges that students face today and underscores how coordinated efforts can set a new path for Californians.

California Competes sees the opportunity to help more Californians like Jairo get back on track, which is why we’re working with Compton College, El Camino College, Los Angeles Southwest College, West Los Angeles College, and Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell’s Office through the Career Ready regional pilot. This pilot centers the needs of LA residents by bringing together key entities to improve coordination that will ultimately boost postsecondary access, success, and connections to high quality jobs.

“When I reflect on how I got to where I am now, it was through the alignment of social services, employers and a higher education institution — and their shared culture of supporting the whole student.”

For Jairo, having the various systems connected helped ensure he had the support needed to achieve his educational and career goals. Learn more from Jairo’s commentary linked below.
