Clinical Bottlenecks: How Big is the Problem? Solutions to Consider.

California Competes Executive Director Dr. Su Jin Gatlin Jez, Senior Policy and Research Analyst Gail Yen, and Futuro Health Educational Consultant Dr. Grant Goold presented at the California Community College Association for Occupational Education Spring Conference on March 16, 2021.

They discussed research findings from Meeting California’s Demand for Allied Health Workers. In this report, California Competes analyzes the barriers limiting the state’s supply of allied health professionals and offers solutions to address an anticipated annual shortage of up to 37,000 workers. Among the most significant challenges at hand are pipeline “bottlenecks,” wherein more students are trying to fulfill their required clinical hours—which are as high as 1,850 hours, depending on the program—than there are clinical hours available.
