The Honorable Aída Álvarez
California Competes launches our Leadership Council Spotlight series this month with a conversation between California Competes Executive Director Su Jin Gatlin Jez and the Honorable Aída Álvarez. In it, Ms. Álvarez touches on the critical role higher education has played in her own life and how transforming the field—especially for community college students—will impact our state’s future. She also discussed her work on the California Competes Leadership Council, where she’s eager to pay forward her own experiences in higher education for the benefit of millions of students across the state.
A first-generation college graduate, Ms. Álvarez has had a multifaceted career in journalism, investment banking, and as the first Latina to serve on a President’s Cabinet as Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration under President Bill Clinton.
