More Los Angeles County Adults Intend to Enroll in Higher Education than Adults Statewide
With more than 10 million residents and the state’s most populous city, Los Angeles County is home to 21 community colleges, five California State University campuses, and one University of California undergraduate campus. The California Postsecondary to Prosperity Dashboard, a data analytics tool from California Competes, shows how residents’ access—or lack thereof—to these institutions of higher education affects their futures.
The Dashboard breaks down critical insights into the state of opportunity across Los Angeles County by race, gender, and other demographics, finding disparities among different groups. For example, White and Asian residents are nearly twice as likely to hold a bachelor’s degree compared with other racial and ethnic groups. High school graduation, college-going, and degree attainment rates for the region all fall slightly below the state average.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Forty-four percent of Los Angeles County adults ages 25 and older intend to enroll in college in the next two years, which is higher than the state average.
- At 56 percent, the region’s A-G course completion rate is higher than the state average.
- While 88 percent of Native Americans and Alaska Native residents are employed, only 44 percent earn a living wage.
- Homeownership rates for the region are 16 percent less than the statewide average, and who owns a home varies with race and ethnicity. More than 50 percent of White and Asian residents are homeowners, compared with just 32 percent of Black residents.
- Los Angeles County residents are less likely to have health insurance than Californians as a whole, further exacerbating opportunities for economic mobility.
