California Competes Senior Researcher Laura Bernhard presented at the Community College League of California 2025 Annual Convention on reworking academic probation to promote student success. In her session, participants analyzed current academic probation policies and their impacts on community college students and then identified student-centered alternatives using strengths-based communication strategies and trauma-informed support systems. Participants left with knowledge that can inform policy changes, improve communication channels, and strengthen cross-functional collaboration at their respective campuses.

Policy Analysis
When we interviewed comebacker students last year, we heard their issues loud and clear: current academic probation policies and practices pose significant obstacles to student success and completion. To address their concerns, we highlight how institutions can reform academic probation, ensuring students receive the support to return to (or maintain) good academic standing and achieve their full potential in college and beyond.

CaliforniaAttain! partners conducted research and organized a community of practice to better understand the needs and experiences of returning students. This panel discussion delves into the findings of the resulting publication and explores what was learned and the next steps for both institutions and the state to better support comebackers and increase re-enrollment and degree attainment.
