Clarity for California’s Higher Education Future
In this page:
As California Competes marks our crystal anniversary, we reflect on what has defined our work:
Clarity about what works and what must change
Clarity about the shared responsibility to build a more inclusive, effective higher education and workforce system
Clarity about the vision ahead and what’s needed to achieve it
How We Define the Path Forward
Our work is grounded in three core pillars that shape how we research, convene, and drive lasting systems change:
We help California step back, see the whole system, and align around where it needs to go next.
From reexamining long-standing assumptions embedded in California’s 65-year-old Master Plan to advancing statewide coordination, we help move the conversation beyond incremental reform toward bold, high-impact solutions.
We convene higher education leaders, policymakers, employers, community organizations, and learners to codesign, align priorities, and crystalize a collective path forward.
By centering voices historically left out of decision-making, we co-create solutions that are equitable, grounded in lived experience, and responsive to California’s evolving needs.
We put a spotlight on issues not yet being talked about. We conduct rigorous research. We translate evidence to shape policy and practice.
From elevating the untapped potential of millions of Californians to shaping public discourse on online education and technology in higher education, we bridge the gap between insight and impact.
Marking 15 Years
California Competes celebrated our 15th anniversary—our crystal anniversary—on February 2nd, bringing together policymakers, higher education and business leaders, advocates, and philanthropists to reflect on 15 years of illuminating solutions and advancing shared prosperity through higher education.
